Metro, tram, BRT: the last mile will always need a modernised paratransit sector

As metro, tramway and BRT networks continue to expand across African cities, one key question remains: how can we effectively connect all neighbourhoods and all residents?

Paratransit remains an essential part of the mobility chain in many African cities. Flexible, close to users and able to serve areas that are difficult to reach through conventional public transport, it plays a crucial role in connecting major transport corridors with people’s everyday mobility needs.

🔹 How can mass transit and paratransit be better integrated?

🔹 How can service quality, safety and operating conditions be improved while preserving the flexibility that makes this sector so effective?

🔹 How can paratransit be modernised and integrated into more sustainable, inclusive and resilient mobility systems?

These questions will be at the heart of the discussions during the International Conference on Sustainable Mobility and Climate (#CIMDC2026), co-organised by Codatu, Climate Chance and AMUGA, taking place in Abidjan from 19 to 22 October 2026.
