SUCCESSFUL BUS PROCUREMENT AND OPERATION IN AFRICA – A GUIDE FOR URBAN MOBILITY STAKEHOLDERS

The project of a guide to successful bus procurement and operation in Africa was initiated by CODATU in July 2017, in partnership with the French Development Agency and SYTRAL. Based on the observation of a lack of sustainability and efficiency of bus procurement projects in Africa, this project aims to draw lessons from past failures, and to propose concrete solutions to African cities wishing to engage in this type of approach, in order to ensure greater success.

The guide provides all the useful elements and recommendations for these African decision-makers, in an argued, neutral manner, and based on documented cases. In the appendix, it proposes additional elements, such as examples of bus specifications or the CODATU-GART charter for the donation of reformed rolling stock.

The guide was written in partnership with: AFD, the Lyon Urban Planning Agency, ARTELIA, CEREMA, CATP, Greater Lyon, IVECO, KEOLIS, RATP, SCANIA, the Société des Transports de Lomé (SOTRAL), SYTRAL, TRANSITEC, the Île-de-France Region, SUEZ, and Raymond H. Maubois.
