MEDCOP21 – Mediterranean civil society forum in the run-up to COP21, Marseille (France) 4- 5 June 2015

The
Provence-Alpes Côte d’Azur Region will host a meeting of Mediterranean stakeholders at the Villa Méditerranée on 4 and 5 June 2015.The meeting highlights the joint commitment of these stakeholders in adapting to and fighting climate change. It will also showcase the contribution of governments, local authorities, associations, enterprise and networks that are serving as catalysts for sustainable development.

With the goal of helping to build a genuine Positive Mediterranean Agenda, this event also aims to look beyond the constraints and seize the opportunities that fighting climate change offers. It also seeks to make concrete joint proposals for a “Mediterranean Scope of Projects”.

Positive Mediterranean Agenda for Urban Transport

CODATU actively takes part in this event and contributes to build a positive agenda by proposing concrete project proposals in the urban transport sector in partnership with the CEREMA, CMI and AFD. The programme “Sustainable Urban Transport” of the CMI (Centre for Mediterranean Integration of Marseille) leaded by AFD with CODATU and CEREMA is one of the projects selected for the Mediterranean positive agenda. The Urban Transport National Days, the NAMAs (Nationally Adapted Mitigation Actions) articulated with Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) and Weekly “Carfree Days” are enrolled as “solutions” to develop low carbon urban mobility in developing cities.

The Workshop “Sustainable Cities and Territories”, Friday, June 5 from 8:30 to 10:30

The Workshop Sustainable Cities and Territories organized by the AVItem is a moment of exchange and visibility for projects that contribute to ensure a sustainable urban development. “Dealing with the multiple challenges of fighting climate change, governments mobilize through the implementation of national public policies and international commitments. Local authorities are of course crucial actors in the fight against climate change through their involvement in the operational implementation of these commitments and public policies. However, at the end of this chain, cities’ and territories’ inhabitants remain primarily concerned with climate change and, primarily responsible in the identification and implementation of “solutions” likely to promote an ecological transition. Ultimately, the way men and women live, work, consume, produce and travel, is the main lever for action for the definition of sustainable lifestyles.”

The program “Sustainable Urban Transport” led by AFD with CODATU and CEREMA has been running for 6 years with very positive results in terms of outputs and impacts. It will be presented during Workshop 1 “Cities and Sustainable Territories” to be held at the Villa Mediterranean Friday, June 5 from 8:30 to 10:30. Do not miss it!

The Solutions’ Village, Friday, June 5 from 13h45 to 14h00 (Espace Agora)

The Solutions’ Village will open MEDCOP21 to the general public. It will play host to tangible, existing and future projects on combatting and adapting to climate change in Mediterranean countries. Each area will bring together several partners working on the same project. There will be room for ten to fifteen projects. In addition to partner projects, the “Solutions Village” will also have a public space, the “Espace Agora” where activities will be organised by the partners.

CODATU will moderate, in the Espace Agora, a round table on the initiative “Sustainable Urban Mobility … What’s your plan?” to discuss the importance of transport planning in the fight against climate change in the Mediterranean cities. Looking forward to seeing you there!
