Important step for the MED Urban Transport Community !

On 17 and 18 September, the MED Urban Transport Community met in Malaga to mark a milestone. Indeed, it was the final event of the first phase of the GOSUMP project, which animates this thematic community within the InterregMED European Program.

After almost 3 years of existence of this community, it was time to take stock of the results obtained, to transcribe the lessons learned into policy recommendations, to celebrate the synergies created and to identify the future challenges of the community.

Two technical visits made it possible to get to the heart of the subjects covered by the majority of the Urban Transport Community Projects: smart mobility and electric mobility:

• Malaga Integrated Traffic Control Centre: Aiming to improve the traffic flow, by means of implementing advanced traffic control tools focused on reducing stop-and-go traffic, reducing and/or adapting average speed, and maximizing the reduction of emissions through traffic control (NOx, PM10).
• Le Showroom de ZEM2ALL : A ground-breaking initiative in Malaga aimed at offering individuals and businesses access to e-mobility. The 198 e-vehicles included in the project now operating in Malaga have avoided the emission of over 200 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere compared to using conventional combustion-engine vehicles.

After an official reception at the City Council, the leaders of the projects of the Community discussed the lessons learned during the implementation of the projects. They also shared their expectations for the near future as part of the Med Urban Transport Community. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by all, renewing their commitment to SUMP principles and understanding their role to continue to promote the legacy of projects to support the transition to sustainable mobility in the Mediterranean. Indeed, the second phase of the GOSUMP project is expected to start soon.

The elaboration of policy recommendations, begun in November 2018, continued during working sessions to amend and complete the recommendations at the various levels, local, regional, national and European, which will be published shortly.

An exhibition of the results of the projects of the Med Urban Transport Community then made it possible to exchange informally with the various partners of the projects.

The promotion of the results continued on September 19th with the final event of the LOCATIONS project aimed at meeting the specific mobility challenges of the coastal cities, a destination favored by cruise passengers.

The Community was also present at the CIVITAS Forum in Graz from 2 to 4 October, as well as at the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels on 9 October. On October 24th, the MED for YOU event will also be held to capitalize on the results of all Interreg MED projects.
