Dominican Republic: growing support for cycling

To mark World Bicycle Day, INTRANT and the FIMUS programme team organised two events aimed at promoting active mobility in the Dominican Republic.

On 3 June, a Cycling Mobility Forum brought together more than 70 participants from public institutions, local authorities, cycling associations, road safety organisations and funding bodies. The event provided an opportunity to present ongoing cycling projects and future programmes to develop cycling, whilst highlighting the synergies between the various initiatives being carried out across the country.

On 4 June, a free 12 km cycle ride in Santo Domingo Este attracted more than 300 participants, demonstrating the growing interest in cycling. This event also coincided with the launch of construction work on a new cycle path in the municipality, attended by representatives from INTRANT, AFD, the European Union, the Dutch Embassy and the local council, amongst others.

As part of the FIMUS programme, implemented by Codatu and Expertise France, 11 of the 27 planned activities will contribute directly to the development of cycling and active mobility.

These two events illustrate the momentum building in the Dominican Republic to establish cycling as a fully-fledged mode of transport and to strengthen coordination between the many stakeholders involved in this area.
