Dominican Republic: heading towards the launch of activities

From 9 to 13 February, a mission was held in the Dominican Republic as part of the FIMUS (Fortalecimiento Institucional en movilidad urbana sostenible) programme in order to launch its first operational stages.
The main objective was to meet again with local partners to introduce the project team, including Lloyd Wright, the project manager recruited by Expertise France and recently deployed to the programme. The mission also provided an opportunity to announce the imminent arrival of Candice Lamour, sustainable mobility project officer, and to identify, together with partner institutions, the first actions to be implemented in the short term and the technical monitoring procedures.
During the week, working meetings were held with the various INTRANT departments involved in FIMUS, the National District City Council, FIMOVIT, as well as with French and European institutional partners: the French Embassy in the Dominican Republic, the European Union delegation, the local agency of the French Development Agency and FIAP. These exchanges made it possible to align expectations and consolidate the framework for cooperation.
The mission was marked by strong enthusiasm among local actors for this new technical cooperation programme. Three priority issues clearly emerged from the discussions: the need to support the formalisation of motorbike taxi transport, the need to define a structured public parking policy, considered a key lever for improving the management of public space and urban mobility, and finally, capacity building through the establishment of the first technical monitoring committee.
The next steps are already underway, with the detailed 2026–2029 action plan to be sent out in the coming days, the deployment of Candice Lamour in April, and the organisation in May of an official launch mission bringing together the entire team and local partners for the first technical monitoring committee meeting.
This mission is a decisive step in the operational implementation of the FIMUS programme and in strengthening cooperation on sustainable urban mobility.
