Discovering modes of transport in Antananarivo (Madagascar): Walking

Follow Jean-Jacques Helluin, Executive Director of Codatu, in a series of videos devoted to the different ways of getting around the Malagasy capital. In this first episode, he takes us on a journey to discover the essential role of walking in Antananarivo.

Greater Antananarivo now has a population of nearly 4 million. Mobility there is primarily pedestrian: 73% of journeys are made on foot (PMUD 2025 data), representing around 7 million trips every day.

As the centre and eastern part of the city are very hilly, stairs play an essential role in getting around. However, maintaining them remains difficult, particularly due to water runoff during the rainy season, which poses a real challenge in a partly informal urban fabric.

Stay tuned! Next episode: the bicycle taxi.

Enjoy!
