As part of the technical cooperation with São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro States, two prefeasability studies have been launched aiming the redevelopment of two Brazilian train stations: Palmeiras-Barra Funda in São Paulo and Central do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro.

More than 600 000 commuters pass through Central do Brasil station everyday, using its facilities and the modes of transportation on-site: suburban trains, metro, local and suburban buses, tramway, vans. The study aims to propose a better integration of the means of transportation, and to deal with the urbain redevelopment issues in the station zone, involving the informal commerce management and the security problems.

The Palmeiras-Barra Funda hub includes metro, suburban trains and local, suburban and long-distance buses. More than 400 000 commuters uses the station everyday. The biggest challenge in this case is the station modernization, through in particular one increased commercial value, a better flow management and some propositions regarding the architectural quality.

CODATU was asked by AFD for the drafting of the Terms of Reference, as well as for technical support during the development of the study.

The study was awarded to the Egis Rail, Egis Engenharia e Consultoria and AREP consortium and will consist of three missions, the deliverables of which will include:

  • an analysis of the current situation (regarding the neighborhood, urban mobility, commuters flow and institutional arrangements);
  • a programme and a phasing of implementation for two redevelopment scenarios, estimating the converted areas and the implementation costs;
  • an action plan for one of the two scenarios including a Redevelopment Master Plan, the estimated cost, the next steps and the predicted difficulties.

Both studies were launched during the CODATU workshops held in April in São Paulo and Rio. The duration of the study is 8 months, until December 2018. The results will make it possible to evaluate the relevance of pursuing in-depth studies for the transformation of both hubs in new generation stations.
