CODATU XIV: October 25-27, 2010 - Buenos Aires (Argentina)
The agreement between CODATU and the Municipality of Buenos Aires was signed on November 12, with
from CODATU: Laurence LAFON and Jean-Claude ZIV and from Buenos Aires: Guillermo Dietrich, Deputy Secretary
of Transportation and some members of the transport department. The Department of Cooperation and
Cultural Action of the French Embassy was also present.
The call for papers written in 4 languages (French, English, Spanish and Portuguese) was sent to all

We remind you the conference’s theme and its 4 sub-themes:
Theme: «Sustainable transport and the quality of life in the city»
Sub themes:
- Policy of urban transport
- The offer of services of the sustainable transportation
- The individual motorized transport, agent of the sustainable urban mobility
- How to improve the quality of public transport?
We begin to receive some abstracts. We remind you that the deadline for submission of proposals is
on December 31, 2009.
A meetting of the International Scientifc Committee scheduled at the General Council in October, will
be held during the TRB on January 14, in Washington.
Lome:
The last 6 buses, purpose of the agreement between SYTRAL and the Municipality of Lome arrived at
the end of November in Lome.
A notice of non objection was issued by AFD at the end of April for an expert mission related to the
development of the buses network by SOTRAL.
This mission was entrusted to Effia. The study is made up of 3 phases:
- Diagnosis of the experimental line
- Developing the offer of the Sotral
- Functional recommendations
For the phase 1, Michel TINDANO (Effia’s senior planner) was in Lome for 5 weeks. During this phase,
intervews whith all the SOTRAL’s staff and with users, surveys, counting in the buses, a visit of the depot
and the experimental line were made.
Michel TINDANO benefited on the spot from the support and expertise of Xavier GODARD, CODATU’s
advisor for the Mediterranean Region and Africa.
The launching meeting of the study was held on October 21, in the presence of the Mayor of Lome,
representatives of the local AFD, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The Minister of Transport is waiting for the results of this study to carry out some actions to support
the SOTRAL.
The mission’s report (phase 1) should be finished by the end of December.
STUDY AFD/MEEDDM :
The handbook of good practices in funding urban transport is now available and will be soon downloadable
on CODATU’s website, heading «studies».
A workshop was organized by the contracting planners (AFD / MEEDDM) with the support of CODATU
on last November 30, to present and deliver this handbook to the people attending this meeting.
The context of the study was exposed, followed by some very interesting examples of the good practices
in funding.
AFRICITIES 2009 : Marrakech (Morocco) - December 16-20 :
A special session of CODATU «Mobility in African ci es and public transport» was held on December 18
from 8:00am to 11:00am during the 5th Summit «AFRICITIES». The program was designed by Xavier GODARD,
who will present this session in partnership with Abdellatif CHADALI of the DGCL Morocco. A «save the date»
was sent to all our contacts.
DAMASCUS (Syria) : April 11-13, 2010 - Regional Conference on sustainable urban transport :
As part of the programme «sustainable urban transport» of the Marseille Center for Mediterranean
Integration, the French Development Agency is setting up a cycle of six meetings on 3 years : 2010-2012,
registration’s fees free. The Damascus Conference, organized with CODATU’s support will be the first event of it.
Four main themes will be tackled: strategic framework, multimodal integration, urban structuring,
environmental and social impacts. They will be studied thoroughly and continuously during the next meetings:
four thematic workshops organized every semester between the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2012.
A closing regional conference will review and the capitalize this work during the last quarter of 2012.
The meeting’s place will be alternately chosen in the South and North of the Mediterranean region. The main
goal of the three years cycle of six meetings is to create a shared Mediterranean culture of good practices in
sustainable urban transport.
On December 7 and 8, a delegation AFD - CODATU traveled to Damascus to meet the Syrian’s partners.
The welcome was very warm and the exchanges constructive.
